Move-In Cleaning Guide: How to Start Fresh in Your New Home

Published April 22, 2025 · Black Diamond Cleaning Solutions

Moving into a new home is exciting. But before you unpack a single box, it is worth asking: how clean is this space, really?

Even new construction homes contain construction dust, chemical residues, and debris. Existing homes carry the cleaning habits — or lack thereof — of every previous tenant or owner.

A proper move-in cleaning ensures you are starting fresh in every sense of the word.

Why Move-In Cleaning Matters

Most homes that appear clean on the surface are not truly clean where it counts. Previous residents may have cleaned for showings without addressing the areas that actually accumulate the most bacteria and grime.

A move-in deep clean covers the places that rarely get touched during a standard clean: inside cabinets, refrigerator coils, oven interiors, window tracks, and behind appliances. These areas carry the history of whoever lived there before you.

The Move-In Cleaning Checklist

Kitchen

  • Inside all cabinets and drawers — wipe down to remove crumbs, residue, and prior liner paper
  • Inside the refrigerator, including crisper drawers
  • Oven interior and oven drawer
  • Under the stove and refrigerator
  • Behind the refrigerator (often heavily dusty)
  • Dishwasher filter and interior
  • All countertops and backsplash
  • Sink and garbage disposal

Bathrooms

  • Toilet (full clean including under the rim and base)
  • Shower and tub with grout scrubbing
  • Medicine cabinet interior
  • Under-sink cabinet
  • Exhaust fan
  • All hardware and fixtures descaled

Bedrooms and Common Areas

  • All closets — shelves, rods, walls, floors
  • Ceiling fans and light fixtures
  • Window sills, tracks, and blinds
  • Baseboards throughout the home
  • Light switch plates and door handles
  • Doors and door frames
  • All floors vacuumed and mopped

Should You Do It Yourself or Hire a Pro?

You can handle a move-in clean yourself — but consider that you are also managing movers, utilities setup, address changes, and a hundred other tasks during a move. A professional team can complete a thorough move-in clean in a fraction of the time it would take one person, and they bring the right tools and products.

Move-in cleanings are one of our most requested services at Black Diamond. We use a detailed room-by-room checklist and can often complete same-week appointments even during busy moving seasons.

Timing Your Move-In Clean

Ideally, schedule your move-in cleaning before the movers arrive. An empty space is far easier to clean thoroughly, and you will not need to work around furniture.

If that is not possible, a cleaning after the move-in is still well worth it — just let your cleaner know there will be boxes and furniture to work around.
